Isle of Man Legislative Landscape
The Isle of Man currently meets its energy requirements by means of a gas pipeline and a two way AC interconnector connection with the UK.
With the exception of a 1MW hydro system, there is currently very little renewable energy generation on the Island.
The 80MW CCGT located at Pulrose supplies the majority of the Island’s power, with the interconnector providing resilience and a source of revenue from excess power generation. This leaves the Manx people dependent on the turbulent energy markets driving the cost and creating uncertainty, this is of increasing concern to the MUA, Tynwald and consumers.
With 84% of our electricity is being generated by imported fossil fuels, the Island has to make significant a change to carbon neutral electricity to meet its carbon emission obligations under the Climate Change Act. Under this act the Island is committed to achieving net zero by 2050. An interim target of a 45% reduction by 2035 was agreed in March 2022 with an interim target of a 35% reduction by 2030.
